'Asylum of the Birds' is a new body of work by Roger Ballen, one of the most original image-makers of our times. Ballen has always sought to push the boundaries of photographic practice and has created an aesthetic and artistic vision unlike any other contemporary photographer. The images here have been photographed entirely within the confines of a house in a Johannesburg suburb, the location of which remains a tightly guarded secret. The inhabitants of the house, both people and animals, and most notably the ever-present birds, are the cast who perform within a sculptural and decorated theatrical interior that Ballen creates and orchestrates. The resulting images are painterly, complex and surreal.

Darren Almond’s nocturnal nature seriesIn Fullmoon, the conceptual meets the poetic: in more than 260 photographs, British artist Darren Almond catches landscapes around the globe, under the particular light of a full moon. With the shutter kept open for over a quarter of an hour, rivers, meadows, mountains, and seashores are illuminated almost like daybreak, but the atmosphere is different: a mild glow emanates even from the shadows, star-lines cross the sky, and water blankets the earth like a misty froth. The enhanced moonlight infuses the landscapes with a sense of the surreal or the sublime, and with haunting ideas of time, nature and beauty. The series circles around the possibility of Romantic themes today: majestic American mountains, austere Arctic ice fields, picturesque rocks by the seashore in Japan, and, most intimately viewed, the nature of Britain, whose painterly subjects are closest to home. This book covers all parts of Almond's fullmoon series from the turn of the century up until today. It features an introduction by Sheena Wagstaff, head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Department of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and an in-depth essay by writer and critic Brian Dillon.

In this book, Todd Hido explores the genres of landscape, interiors, and nude photography, with an emphasis on creating images from a personal perspective. Through words and photographs, he reveals insight into his own practice and discusses a wide range of creative issues, including mining one's own memory and experience as inspiration; using light, texture, and detail for greater impact; exploring the narrative potential activated when sequencing images; and creating powerful stories with emotional weight and beauty. Gregory Halpern, a student of Todd Hido, provides the introduction.

The art and architectural photographer Filip Dujardin (*1971 in Ghent) has been working on a series since 2007 whose humor and entertainment value is accompanied by references to art history: Fictions presents wonderful objects in conceptional subjectivity and is full of jocularity and persiflage. With the aid of a digital collage technique consisting of photographs of existing buildings in and around Ghent, the city of his birth, the artist creates buildings that have been ingeniously embedded in the landscape and whose construction would be impossible—fabrications in the true sense of the word. It is not until one inspects them more closely that one realizes that their construction and design is implausible. Readers will marvel at the impressive bridges, intricate residential complexes, strange interiors between gymnasium and industrial building, and abstract, apparently sculptural formations.

"North Warning System is Donovan Wylie's third and final book of photographs on the theme of vision and power in military architecture and draws a close to The Tower Series. Surveying a radar station just inside the Canadian Arctic, the photographer examines the detection of invisible threats through unmanned observation posts in remote regions. The development of long-range bombers and missiles after the Second World War made Canada's arctic frontier vulnerable to attack from the air. This forced Canada and the United States jointly to construct a matrix of short and long-range radar stations in the 1950s. Known as the Distant Early Warning Line, these stations provided electronic observation and surveillance capability across Canada's northern frontier throughout the Cold War. In the 1990s, these stations were upgraded to form the North Warning System (NWS) which is increasingly active--as international maritime traffic develops throughout the north, so does military presence. In North Warning System, whiteness takes on the quality of a blank canvas, a metaphor for the sweep of history"--Provided by publisher.
